United Kingdom - Solar System planning requirements

In the United Kingdom, most residential solar panel installations do not require planning permission, as they fall under what's known as Permitted Development Rights. However, certain conditions and limitations need to be considered. Here are some general guidelines:

Solar Planning in the UK.

  • Location and Size:
    Solar panels should be installed on the roof or wall of a building and should not protrude more than 20 centimetres from the roof slope or wall surface. Only after obtaining appropriate permissions should you install panels on a building within a conservation area or listed building.
  • Orientation and Angle:
    The solar panels should be installed to minimise their visibility from the road and neighbouring properties. They should be angled towards the equator (south-facing in the UK) and not significantly deviate from the roof's pitch.
  • Capacity:
    The installation should have a capacity of 50% of the total roof area or 100% if specific energy efficiency measures have been implemented.

  • Additional Considerations:
    If you live in a designated area, such as a National Park, Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, or World Heritage Site, there may be additional restrictions or requirements. Additionally, you may need to seek planning permission if the property is subject to an Article 4 Direction or has specific planning conditions.
